About this book
Roxy Music is a rock band from Newcastle upon Tyne and London, England. Bryan Ferry, who served as lead vocalist and chief songwriter, formed the group in 1970 with bassist Graham Simpson. Its longtime lineup also included Phil Manzanera on guitar, Andy Mackay on saxophone and oboe, and Paul Thompson on drums and percussion. Former members include Brian Eno, who played synthesizer and treatments, Eddie Jobson, who played synthesizer and violin, and John Gustafson, a bassist.
The band went on hiatus in 1976 and again in 1983. It regrouped for a concert tour in 2001 and toured on and off until it broke up in 2011. Ferry frequently brought in Roxy Music members as session musicians on his solo records. The group found success in Europe and Australia during the 1970s, beginning with its self-titled debut album from 1972.
Roxy Music helped develop the more sophisticated side of glam rock and had a strong influence on early English punk. It also provided a template for many new wave acts and experimented with electronic composition. The band was known for pairing its musical ambition with a strong visual identity built on glamorous fashion. Ferry and co-founder Brian Eno both went on to influential solo careers, and Eno became one of Britain's most significant record producers of the late twentieth century.
Rolling Stone placed Roxy Music at number 98 on its list of the 100 greatest artists of all time, though the group was dropped from the magazine's updated version in 2011. The band's last studio album, Avalon, came out in 1982 and was certified platinum in the United States. In 2005 the group began recording a ninth studio album, which would have been its first record with Eno since 1973. Eno wrote two of its songs and played keyboards. Ferry later announced that the material would instead be released as his own solo album, with Eno appearing on only a couple of tracks, and he said he did not expect Roxy Music to record together again. That record became Ferry's solo album Olympia in 2010. The band played a series of 40th anniversary shows the following year but has been inactive since. Roxy Music was nominated for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2018.
