Sacrifice

Kisapmata, an island in the Philippines, looks like a holiday paradise with its sandy shores, dense greenery, and ideal weather. Yet a curse hangs over it. Local residents lower their voices when they speak of the place and refuse to set foot on it, having seen how many lives it has taken.

A Hollywood film crew, undeterred by these warnings, arrives to gather proof of the legend. According to the tale, a sleeping Dreamer god will grant incredible powers to whoever offers it eight sacrifices. The producers recruit Alon, a local teenager, to guide them. Within minutes of landing, a huge sinkhole opens to reveal a giant balete tree with a mummified corpse caught in its twisted branches, and the crew begin to suffer strange visions.

Alon realizes the outsiders have fallen under the island's curse. If he cannot persuade them to leave, no one can say who will survive or how much damage the Dreamer god will cause. The author of The Girl from the Well and the Bone Witch trilogy has written this creepy, suspenseful YA horror novel for readers who enjoy spooky teen ghost stories and East Asian folklore.
