Saha
About This Book
Cho Nam-Joo, a National Book Award finalist, follows Kim Jiyoung, Born 1982, the novel that marked her as a significant new voice in fiction. In this book, rendered into English by Jamie Chang, her clipped and precise style turns toward a dystopian community. Town is a former fishing village that a large conglomerate has bought and transformed into a prosperous, orderly place. Only people judged to have useful talents and property may live there comfortably. The residents of Saha Estates, a neglected housing complex on the outskirts, have neither. Wary and reticent, they are pushed into punishing labor and live in damp apartments without electricity. The novel moves among several Saha residents, including a midwife who never wanted the job, a person who unknowingly becomes a test subject, and a pair of siblings who have been separated. Their stories join into an Orwellian parable about the Saha's suffering and the hardships of living under a system that hides its rulers. The book is a sorrowful story about what happens when the people in power are finally exposed.
