About this book
In a not-too-distant future, rising seas have swallowed coastal cities, highways crumble underwater, and mutant fish lurk in depths controlled by pirates. Skipper, the youngest of three sisters, is a skilled sailor who earns money by skimming plastic from the ocean and reselling it, so she can care for her ailing grandmother.
Then her eldest sister, Nora, goes missing. Nora left home ten years earlier to search for a cure for the crop failures spreading across the world. When Skipper and her other sister, Carmen, receive a cryptic plea for help, they set aside their differences and sail out to find and save her.
Their voyage takes them through a dying but strangely beautiful world, where they meet other travelers and learn more about Nora's work and the corporations that want what she discovered. The further they go, the less certain their mission becomes. They must ask what dangerous attention Nora drew, and how well they really know her, or each other.
The novel is an epic journey across oceans and continents, and a wistful reflection on sisterhood, friendship and ecological disaster. It is by Yume Kitasei, author of The Stardust Grail. Content warnings are available on the author's website.
