Samantha

Samantha has lost her parents and is being raised in 1904 by her grandmother, who is determined to make her a refined young lady. She has every comfort money can buy, yet she feels alone in her grand household.

Her routine is upended when Uncle Gard arrives for a visit, bringing his companion, Miss Cornelia Pitt, and a present meant especially for her. The visit does not go as anyone hoped. Her loneliness deepens when she learns she is forbidden from playing with Nellie, the girl next door, because Nellie works as a servant.

Samantha refuses to accept that class should decide who she may know, so she sets out to teach Nellie to read. Though their friendship is forbidden, it teaches Samantha lessons about honesty, loyalty, and what family means.
