Savvy
About This Book
In the Beaumont family, a child's thirteenth birthday brings a savvy, a strange and unpredictable magical talent that arrives without warning. One of Mibs Beaumont's brothers stirs up hurricanes, and another sparks and conjures electricity, so she has high hopes for her own gift. Her big day is only a few days away when her father, Poppa, is badly hurt in an accident. Suddenly Mibs wants one thing from her savvy: the power to save him. She is so certain it will be something remarkable that she slips aboard a battered old bus bound for the hospital. Her siblings come along, and so do the preacher's children, who were never meant to be part of the plan. The journey turns out to be stranger than anyone expected, with tattoos that talk and a kidnapping along the way. By the time the bus reaches its destination, every passenger has been changed. Savvy is the first book in a fantasy series for younger readers. It is funny and warm, and it follows a girl on the edge of adolescence as she learns about family, hope, and why there is no need to hurry through growing up. The book was a Newbery Honor selection.
