Scumbler
About This Book
Scumbler is the nickname of the title character, a sixty-year-old American who paints on the Left Bank of Paris. He earns his living by turning the most unlikely nooks and corners into apartments that can be rented out. What he loves most, though, is painting itself, and he throws himself into it with pure joy. Along the way he meets an assorted crowd of craftsmen, students, prostitutes and motorcyclists. His life is full of odd projects. He digs winding tunnels beneath the city streets, builds nests of every kind, from rats' nests to birds' nests, and collects clocks. He tries things, sometimes fails, and tries again. The novel presents him as a figure with something of Don Quixote, Santa Claus and Faust in him, a man who shapes his life from the inside out. What Scumbler wants is to be true in a way that goes deeper than simple honesty, and to be fully present rather than merely seen. The book follows him through the delight of making things and the small sorrows of ordinary life, in a story that is both funny and moving. It is by William Wharton, the author of Birdy and Dad.
