About this book
This volume, subtitled Contemporary Art Practices in Southeast Asia, brings together the work of 60 artists and collectives active across the region. It was assembled to address a noticeable gap in published material on the art of this part of the world, and it covers practitioners from Indonesia, Thailand, Myanmar, the Philippines, Vietnam, Cambodia, Singapore and Malaysia.
The artists are arranged alphabetically rather than by theme or country, so the book works as a reference to browse as much as a volume to read straight through. Across the entries, the editor draws out recurring concerns: how artists engage with and organize communities, social and political commentary, questions of gender and identity, the environment and ecology, and the materials and processes rooted in local traditions.
The contributors include Agus Suwage, Alfredo and Isabel Aquilizan, Amanda Heng, Anida Yoeu Ali, Anne Samat, Anocha Suwichakornpong, Apitchatpong Weerasethakul, Arahmaiani, Araya Rasdjarmrearnsook, Arin Rungjang, Cemeti, the Institute for Art and Society, Charles Lim, Chiang Mai Social Installation, Chris Chong, Dinh Q Le, Eisa Jocson, Erika Tan, F.X. Harsono, Green Papaya Art Projects, Ho Tzu Nyen, Htein Lin, I Gusti Ayu Kadek Murniasih, Khvay Samnang, Korakrit Arunanondchai, Lee Wen, Lostgens’, Martha Atienza, Melati Suryodarmo, Ming Wong, Moe Satt, Montien Boonma, Nguyen Trinh Thi and ruangrupa.
