Ravenna Drake is a dragon who has spent her life staying ahead of government agents, moving on whenever her true nature might come to light. She earns her living restoring illegal magical goods for the black market, but when the woman who raised her is diagnosed with cancer, she gives up that rootless work for a dependable position.

Her quieter routine falls apart when her name turns up at the scene of a werewolf killing. Dr. Ian Chen, a sorcerer bonded to a powerful relic, works for the government treating supernatural citizens. When one of his patients is found completely drained of blood, he refuses to stand aside and pursues the case himself. The investigation brings him face to face with Ravenna, who is striking and maddening in equal measure and will not stay away from the case or follow his instructions.

As more bodies drained of blood surface, threats from secret societies and corrupt politicians push the dragon and the sorcerer into an uneasy partnership. The stakes are personal: if they cannot catch the killer, the people they care about most may be the next victims.
