Shine Bright

Imani's confidence takes a hit when some of her peers admit they are frightened of her because of her deep skin tone. Rather than letting their words define her, she turns to her sister, who reminds her of the qualities that make her who she is: intelligent, hopeful, brave, beautiful, strong, and exactly enough as she is.

Once Imani embraces what sets her apart, she gains the courage to face the world without fear. The story draws on the real experiences of Kheris Rogers, the young CEO and designer behind the clothing brand Flexin' in My Complexion. This first picture book by Rogers celebrates dark-skinned girls and is expected to uplift many young readers.

Beyond the story, the book serves as a teaching tool for conversations about inner and outer beauty, accepting differences, treating oneself and others with kindness, and using affirmations.
