Shy
About This Book
Shy follows a troubled teenage boy through a handful of strange hours. He has run away from Last Chance, a residential home for young men with serious behavioural problems, and is roaming the night alone. Inside his head, a crowd of voices competes for attention: teachers, his parents, people he has harmed, and people who still want to look after him. Some warn him not to injure himself, while others jeer about his medication. The novel moves through guilt, rage and imagination, and through the blurred space between night terrors, memory and the uncertain future waiting for him. Its central experience is being lost in the dark and slowly discovering that you are not alone in it. The night feels enormous, and it hurts. Max Porter returns to the subject of boyhood he explored in Grief Is the Thing with Feathers and Lanny. Here he asks how playful curiosity and wild, unruly energy can harden into something darker and more violent. The book is written in a lyrical, performative voice aimed at adult readers.
