Six Days
About This Book
Daniel is an Australian who has lived in Paris for more than forty years. In the winter of 2012, over six days in the Latin Quarter, he is trying to make up for a messy past and become the good man his friend Marcelline believes him to be. Then Marcelline vanishes. The ordinary rhythm of his days tips out of balance, and a misjudgment on his part puts at risk everything he holds dear. Amanda Curtin keeps the present action to those six days but lets it open outward into whole lives and histories. Other people's stories thread through Daniel's: abandonment and broken families, rape and coercion, addiction, ambition, loss and grief, each told in brief moments. They are set against wartime occupation, the revolutionary sixties, riots in a Catalan town in the south of France, and a grassroots movement to make the invisible homeless visible. The personal and the political are stitched together and cannot be pulled apart. Through it all runs the steady sound of footsteps and the patter of paws, as Daniel and his old dog walk the streets of one of the most idealised and romanticised cities in the world. With a mystery at its heart, the novel looks at what it costs to be kind and how a person endures.
