About this book
Over the New Year's holiday weekend of 2001, a group of ambitious guests gathers at an upscale Pennsylvania resort, each hoping to outmaneuver the others without tipping their hand. Not everyone can leave a winner, and a few may not leave at all. Meanwhile, a clumsy stickup and an unlikely act of retaliation keep colliding with one another.
Stoney Creek began during the Depression as the project of Greta Kasser, a shrewd German immigrant who started out as a kitchen worker. She persuaded her wealthy employer to hand over a small parcel of land and then built it into a fortune. Over the decades the resort has been the backdrop for romance, passion, good and bad fortune, and absurd situations. Now Greta's heirs run it, each pursuing private goals.
Into this mix come a mysterious millionaire trying to buy the resort and an inept street thug who breaks into the hidden room where the cash is kept. A good cop and his hardened father, also a cop, work the case and clash with each other along the way. A cruel sheriff schemes on the side, and the millionaire holds a startling disclosure. The story follows people whose lives tumble into trouble, some dragged under while others struggle to stay afloat at the top.
