Smashbox

Gathered here for the first time are more than thirty years of portraits made by Davis Factor at Smashbox Studios. The subjects are mostly women, with a fair number of men, and include Jennifer Lopez, Kim Kardashian, Charlize Theron, Samuel L. Jackson, and Angelina Jolie.

Factor is the great-grandson of Max Factor, the cosmetics pioneer. In 1990 he and Dean Factor, also a great-grandson of Max Factor, founded Smashbox Studios and the Smashbox brand, which are widely recognized in the worlds of glamour and makeup. The company began in a Los Angeles studio, where its work was tested by professional makeup artists and photographers, and it now carries the name of one of the most established families in American cosmetics. Its makeup is known both on set and off.

Smashbox builds on more than a century of Hollywood glamour. The Factor family once shaped the looks of Clara Bow, Joan Crawford, Jean Harlow, Bette Davis, Judy Garland, and many other icons of Hollywood's golden age, and the company now does the same for today's celebrities.

The book presents a picture of present-day Hollywood glamour, in the tradition of George Hurrell and other figures of golden-age film photography.
