Anita Blake, a vampire hunter, is nearly ready to marry Jean-Claude, the vampire king of America, in what has been called the wedding of the century. Their celebration is cut short when an ancient malevolence arrives in St. Louis. Jean-Claude's considerable power is not enough to stop it.

Their best hope, it seems, lies in the return of a lost love. Only that reunion can give them a way to defeat the creature, protect the people they care about, and keep every vampire across the country from being swallowed by the dark.
