The novel opens with a narrator looking back on Sadie Hatch, who set her up five years earlier to take the blame for a blackmail scheme. The narrator spent six months behind bars, has made peace with her innocence and the naivety that prison cost her, and now that Sadie's death has made resentment easier to let go, she still wonders whether it makes her a bad person that she feels no regret. She has learned that second-guessing her feelings is wasted effort.

Alice Moore, a medium who also debunks paranormal claims and blogs about them, has found love for the first time, though her bank account is not keeping up. When fellow ghost hunter Roman Ellis hires Alice and her boyfriend Denver Hatch to look into a haunting at a Florida plantation house, she accepts despite her dislike of him, since his payment is hard to refuse.

Alice is used to working with the long-departed, not the newly dead, so when she comes upon a fresh corpse, she finds herself at the center of a murder investigation, with her criminal record working against her. Can she track down the real killer and establish her innocence?

The book is a spin-off of the award-winning Fiona Fleming Cozy Mysteries. As Alice travels across the United States, she exposes hoaxes, deceit and killings wherever she goes.
