About this book
Designed to be completed over one academic year, this two-volume course serves intermediate learners of Chinese who want to reach a high advanced plus or advanced level (ACTFL/CEFR B2-C1). It uses contemporary Chinese society as its lens, asking students to think and speak about the social questions that shape daily life in China today.
Volume I is organised around five themes: gender equality, e-commerce, online culture, diet and health, and environmental protection. Each one draws on current public debate in China, giving learners real-world context for practising argument and written expression.
The Chinese in the materials is fluent, precise and polished. Important language points, including expressions, vocabulary, set phrases and grammar, are broken out clearly for study. Every lesson includes drills and exercises that build speaking ability and conceptual understanding through group discussion, essays, presentations, two-way translation and critical reflection. Audio recordings, dictation exercises and supplementary reading are available online.
Written by a team of experienced teachers, the course aims to prepare students for the move from academic study into professional work. Researchers and academics interested in contemporary Chinese social issues who want to strengthen their language skills will also find it useful.
