Some Heads
About This Book
Some Heads presents a series of drawings by the German artist Max Neuman, who is known for painting anonymous figures. Between 2015 and 2017 he drew a run of heads, each one a single moment and each set apart from the others. They face the viewer as though looking out at a crowd. The drawings prompt a string of questions. Who are these figures? Can they be called portraits? Do they look back at us, or do they seem more like spirits? The book starts from the observation that a face may be considered a head, but a head does not necessarily carry a face. The volume reproduces the drawings and pairs them with an essay by the cultural theorist and curator Hubertus von Amelunxen. His text questions the heads and the faces and dwells on the erasure of individuality.
