Someplace Generous
About This Book
Someplace Generous is the first book from Generous Press, a new romance imprint that aims to change who gets to appear in the genre. It gathers twenty-two never-before-published romantic stories by twenty-two authors, all centered on joy, passion, and generous consent. Contributors include poets such as Richard Siken, Rachel McKibbens, and Brionne Janae, fiction writers such as Temim Fruchter, Corinne Manning, and Max Delsohn, and thinkers such as Jessica P. Pryde. Many of them are new to romance. Desire here is explored through queer, trans, Black, AAPI, Latinx, Jewish, disabled, and neurodivergent lenses, and the authors and characters span generations. The collection gives space to characters and perspectives that romance narratives have historically left out. The stories vary in length and style, from flash fiction to full short stories, and across subgenres including speculative fiction, satire, and romcom. The situations are wide-ranging. Two Modern Orthodox Jewish women cross a magical threshold on the holiday of Shavuot. A Chinese American grandmother in a nursing home plays matchmaker just before the Lunar New Year. A nonbinary sex worker with psychic abilities helps an older woman reconnect with her long-lost lover. Two disabled young adults find deeper intimacy as they work through shame. An enslaved couple jumps the broom and sees a future of freedom. The lovers throughout, whether sapphic vampires, undercover superheroes, teenagers, or middle-aged mothers, choose each other, and in doing so they also choose themselves.
