Something Missing From This World
About This Book
Something Missing From This World is a multilingual anthology of Yazidi poetry. It appears ten years after 2014 and the seventy-fourth genocide of the Yazidis, a people who have long faced persecution, displacement, and ethnic cleansing from their ancestral lands in the Kurdish regions. In the aftermath of that violence, new poetic voices have emerged on university campuses and in camps for internally displaced people along the borders of Syria, Iraq, and Turkey, as well as across the Yazidi diaspora. Globalizing forces are adding to the erasure of Yazidi culture and traditions, and the poets in this book hold their ground, with their art standing as a testament to Yazidi resistance and presence. The anthology belongs to a Yazidi poetic tradition that has historically preserved and documented the community's traditions, dispossessions, and erasures. Recounting the 2014 genocide for future generations is an act of witnessing in itself. The poems are translated from Arabic and Kurmanji, and the poets affirm that Yazidi voices will not be missed from this world.
