Stake & Eggs

Suzanne, Toni, and Petra all lost their husbands, and rather than stay stuck in grief they pooled their efforts and opened the Cackleberry Club, a cafe that has become a thriving local favorite. Serving hearty breakfasts to the regulars is what they planned for. Solving murders was never on the menu.

That changes one winter day when a snowmobile careens into the woods behind the cafe. Suzanne goes to investigate and finds the town's most despised banker dead, beheaded by a wire stretched across the snow. Since nearly everyone had a reason to dislike him, the list of suspects quickly grows to include some of the cafe's own best customers, each with a motive of their own.

As the investigation gathers momentum, the one promising lead is a young runaway who is hard to pin down but may know more than anyone else. Suzanne has to find this girl and keep her nerve while doing it, because a cold-blooded killer is still out there and the whole town is on edge.

Stake & Eggs is a cozy mystery by Laura Childs, part of her Cackleberry Club series, blending small-town cafe life with a puzzle of a murder.
