About this book
Deputy US Marshal Arliss Cutter heads to the remote Alaskan village of Stone Cross, where he is hunting a killer in a community full of corruption, lies and old secrets. Winter has arrived early in this rural native settlement, and so has hunting season. Caribou and moose are a major source of food for the long, dark months ahead, but Cutter has come for a different kind of quarry.
A federal judge has been receiving death threats and will not accept protection. Cutter and his deputy, Lola Teariki, are assigned to shadow him on his trip to this icy backcountry and keep him safe. They soon learn that no one is truly safe there, and that no one can be ruled out as a suspect.
The village is already frightened when they arrive. A young couple has vanished from their fishing lodge, eight miles upriver, and the lodge's handyman has been found dead beside a crude drawing of a strange symbol. A thick fog has settled over the region and cut the town off from the outside world. With the judge still in danger and two people still missing, Cutter and Lola must work their way through the small-town customs and family loyalties of a tight-knit community, and as its secrets begin to surface, the hunt turns deadly.
