Studies on Types

Dormitories serve as the subject of this study, which examines them as an architectural type. Typology and the study of types are not confined to architecture. They are interdisciplinary ways of ordering knowledge and gaining insight. Within architecture, typology offers a teaching perspective for examining the dense web of links between theory and practice, which the book treats as inseparable, both material and social in nature.

The book grew out of a research project on dormitories conducted at Laboratory EAST. Through a structured analysis, it shows how architecture has answered the challenge of designing buildings meant for people to sleep in together.
