About this book
Venture capitalist Ali Tamaseb assembled what may be one of the largest datasets ever built on startups and used it to ask why some young companies grow into billion-dollar businesses while others fall short. He compared the two groups using roughly 30,000 data points, covering the number of competitors each company faced, the size of its market, the founder's age, the ranking of the founder's university, the quality of the investors, how long fundraising took, and many other variables.
Alongside the numbers, he conducted interviews with founders of billion-dollar companies including Zoom, Instacart, PayPal, Nest, Kite Pharma, and GitHub. He also spoke with investors who backed Facebook, Airbnb, DoorDash, LinkedIn, Stripe, and others, including Peter Thiel, Elad Gil, Sequoia Capital, and Founders Fund.
The findings differed sharply from what Tamaseb expected. Most of these founders had no directly relevant industry experience. Solo founders and chief executives without a technical background were not at a disadvantage. Fewer than 15 percent had gone through any kind of accelerator program, and more than half faced established competitors, which suggests that being first to market with an idea does not actually matter.
The book is aimed at entrepreneurs, investors, and anyone interested in what makes a startup succeed. It challenges common assumptions about the subject and offers practical guidance drawn from the evidence.
