Super Visible

Margaret Stohl, a Marvel creator and coauthor of Beautiful Creatures, wrote this nonfiction book with Judith Stephens, who produces and co-created the Women of Marvel podcast. Their central question is how the familiar arc of a superhero's journey changes when the hero is a girl. To explore it, they trace the women who shaped Marvel's stories and characters from 1939 to the present, and they also reflect on their own experiences with those stories.

The authors interviewed more than 120 women and non-binary people who have contributed to Marvel. Their stated goal is to bring the long-overlooked work of these women into view, and they were given rare access to the company's creators, writers, actors and others to do so.

The book combines biographies and illustrated profiles of creators with reprints and excerpts from historic Marvel comics. It also includes new interviews with actors such as Brie Larson, Scarlett Johansson, Ming-Na Wen, Elizabeth Olsen, Evangeline Lilly, Zoe Saldana and Elizabeth Henstridge; directors Chloé Zhao, Anna Boden, Cate Shortland and Gillian Jacobs; writers including Kelly Sue DeConnick, Eve Ewing, Rainbow Rowell, Nic Stone, G. Willow Wilson, Tini Howard, Maurene Goo and Charlie Jane Anders; artists Jen Bartel, Peach Momoko and Tamra Bonvillian; and producers Victoria Alonso and Sana Amanat.

The book is written for Marvel fans of any age.
