Bess Beringer, a sports agent, turns thirty and decides it's time to bring her professional drive to her love life. Her plan for the next five years is detailed and carefully organized, and it has no room for a man like Mark "Tank" Tankiewicz. Newly traded to the Brooklyn Bruisers, the hulking hockey player has a rough reputation, a history of keeping people at a distance, and a recent breakup behind him.

Tank nonetheless makes it clear that he wants Bess. She knows she should stay away, but she falls for him anyway, and for a time he seems to feel the same. Then she asks for something he has told her he cannot give, and their relationship is tested.
