About this book
Guillermo Marigliano, a guitarist, teacher and composer from Argentina, has put together a new method for guitarists who want to play tango. Rather than a book of solo guitar pieces, it is a manual for learning how to accompany a singer or oneself, with techniques that range from the simplest tango rhythm to far more intricate patterns.
The book begins with traditional rhythmic foundations and then traces the approaches of several celebrated tango composers, namely Carlos Gardel, Aníbal Troilo and Astor Piazzolla. Along the way it presents chords, rhythmic patterns, variations, idiomatic single-note lines and frequently used phrases, all written in both tablature and standard notation.
The concepts taught here can be applied to any tango song, allowing readers to build their own accompaniments and arrangements and to compose new pieces. The author acknowledges that tango's history, with its hundreds of composers and songs, cannot be contained in one volume, and presents this method as a starting point rather than a complete survey.
A companion online video, included with the book, shows Marigliano performing each example.
