Texarkana

Perley Gates has a heavenly name and a reputation to match: honest, decent, and handy with a gun when he has to be. His latest job looks simple. He is to drive a small herd of horses about 150 miles from Arkansas into Texas, delivering them to the Double-D ranch outside Texarkana. Riding with him are his old friend Possum Smith and a young hand named Sonny Rice, and Perley expects nothing worse than dust and saddle sores.

Trouble has a habit of finding him, though. Three horse thieves spot the group on the trail and see an easy mark: one aging sidekick, one green kid, and one quiet man who doesn't look like much. They are badly mistaken, and in this part of the frontier, mistakes like that tend to be fatal.

What starts as a stolen-horse problem grows into a larger fight. Spade Devlin, a notorious gunslinger, is hunting for blood, and a town finds itself under siege. Against that menace stand a handful of decent men and Perley himself, who brings a kind of rough, unforgiving justice to the people who prey on others.

Texarkana is the sixth book in the Perley Gates series, a fast-moving Western about loyalty, courage, and good facing down evil on the Old West frontier.
