This study explores the defining features of the legal reasoning attributed to Imam Jaʿfar al-Ṣādiq, a leading authority on religious law in Medina during the first half of the second century AH.

It follows the intellectual origins of the Jaʿfarī school and considers the method the Imam used to interpret legal sources.
