That Flag
About This Book
Keira and Bianca live across the street from each other, and at school they are inseparable. Their friendship is tested when Keira learns more about what the Confederate flag hanging from Bianca's front porch stands for. The two girls must decide whether they can set aside their different understandings of the flag, or whether they will have to face the lasting effects it has had on the past and still has today. Tameka Fryer Brown addresses racism, the value of friendship, and the importance of understanding history so that people can move forward together. The story is thoughtful and stirring, yet it remains tender at its core. Illustrator Nikkolas Smith, whose work includes The 1619 Project: Born on the Water, brings the story to life. The book is well suited to sparking conversations between younger and older readers. Its back matter covers the history of the Confederate flag and includes notes from the author and illustrator.
