The Act

A pretend marriage to the man she has quietly loved for years is a setup that can only lead to pain, and the narrator knows it. Ford has relied on her before, but never on a request this large. She has never found it easy to refuse him, even when saying no would be the sensible choice.

Things take a turn when she and her husband share a bed. She understands it is a reckless decision, yet it is also everything she has longed for. The imbalance hurts: her feelings go unanswered, and what matters enormously to her means little to him. She has also made promises to other people.
