The Apocalypse

Joseph Augustus Seiss, a Lutheran pastor, works through the Book of Revelation in this series of lectures. He treats the visions of John as a sequence of prophecies that he reads in their historical and scriptural context, offering a verse-by-verse interpretation for lay readers and students of the Bible.

Seiss approaches the book's symbols, churches, seals, trumpets and bowls with the method of a preacher explaining Scripture to a congregation. Rather than setting out a single timeline of future events, he discusses how earlier parts of Revelation connect to the rest of the Bible, especially the Old Testament prophets.

The book suits readers who want a classic, conservative Protestant commentary on the final book of the New Testament, and anyone interested in how nineteenth-century Lutheran thinkers understood prophecy.
