About this book
Sophie is a small orphan who cannot sleep, and one night she spots something impossible in the street outside her window: a giant, tall as a house, creeping along with a long trumpet and a suitcase. He spots her too, and before she can make a sound she is snatched from her bed and carried far away to Giant Country.
Luckily for Sophie, the giant who grabbed her is the BFG, and he is nothing like the others of his kind. He is gentle, kind and a little muddled with his words, so that everything he says comes out jumbled and delightful. The other giants are another matter. They are huge, brutish bone-crunchers, and the Bloodbottler and his companions would happily have eaten her for breakfast had one of them found her first.
Then Sophie learns that the giants are planning a trip to England to feast on human children, or chiddlers as the BFG calls them. She refuses to sit by and let it happen. With the BFG on her side, she sets out to put a stop to the giants once and for all, and the unlikely pair's plan takes them from Giant Country to the streets of London.
Roald Dahl's tall tale is full of invented words, gruesome giants and a warm friendship at its center. It has earned a place among Time magazine's 100 best fantasy books. This edition is a hardcover with color illustrations throughout.
