The Blue Split Compartments
About This Book
The Blue Split Compartments is a sequence of lyric poems by Andrea Brady about the relationships between military drone operators and the people they kill. It is presented as a poetry collection for the drone age. The poems draw on an unusual set of source material: chatroom logs, military policy manuals, pattern of life archives, and accounts from witnesses around the world. From these they document the consequences of a perpetual, everywhere war. The writing plays diction, rhetoric, syntax, positioning, allusion and sound against one another. The result is a linguistically ambitious and humane look at the discursive and military systems that bind operators and victims together in mutual dissolution. A sample poem, Opened, circles around the image of a box, an enclosure that can hold any medium. It is set against the cold ease of a remote strike, which it compares to swatting flies.
