The Broken Man

Adam Carter is twelve, living in 1954 with no siblings, no friends, and little belief in himself. At home he answers to his father, Edward, a hard-driving businessman whose cruelty keeps everyone around him on edge. Adam's mother lives in such fear of her husband that she cannot shield her son from him.

With no one at home to turn to, Adam finds his one source of comfort in Jake Wallis, the man who drives the school bus.
