The burning

Anna and her mother have moved hundreds of miles to leave the past behind. Anna has a new school, a new town and a new last name, and she has deleted all her social media profiles. She hopes for a fresh start, far from the harassment she endured before.

But rumors and whispers begin again. To distract herself, Anna throws herself into researching Maggie, a local woman accused of witchcraft in the seventeenth century. Maggie was shamed and silenced, and her story has unsettling echoes of Anna's own.

The novel asks what happens when a mistake goes viral and there is nowhere to hide. It is a realistic story for the #metoo era by Laura Bates, a feminist writer and the founder of the Everyday Sexism Project. It is written for teen readers and works as a call to action, showing what sexism does and what each of us can do to end it.
