The Call
About This Book
Bharat has just inherited his father's shop when he discovers that goods are leaving it without his say. For years, the factory has been sending its flawed items to a charity as a gift, an arrangement that nobody ever thought to question. To the new owner, though, it looks like his stock is being carted away behind his back. He insists that Sudha Murty visit him herself and ask for the donation all over again. Sudha could take offence, or she could dig in and argue the point. Instead she sees what is behind the demand: a young man thrust into his father's role too soon, anxious to prove himself and to be treated with respect. The question is how to answer him, and what it costs to stand on principle when a little understanding might serve better. This is a short, quietly moving account in which Murty weighs the pull of conflict against the choice to forgive, and shows how generosity can be as much about patience with a person as about giving things away.
