The Captain

On an obscure world, Archmage Varic Vallenar performs a sweeping enchantment meant to grant him the magical gifts of his alternate selves. It works far more completely than he intended. Along with the sorcery, he inherits the memories of six separate lifetimes, including the grim way each one ended. In this galaxy, staying alive means being ready to fight with both spells and firearms.

Varic now commands more magic than any wizard in the galaxy's recorded history, but he knows it may not be enough. The foes he faced in those other lives operated on an apocalyptic scale, blending the dangers of technology and sorcery. They include sun-devouring insects from another dimension, clandestine shadow organizations, genetically engineered alien super-soldiers, merciless megacorporations, and legions of cyborg undead. Any of them could become a world-ending menace without warning, and no spellcraft or fleet of interstellar warships could stop all of them.

Feeling helpless, Varic turns to protecting whatever he can from the looming catastrophe. Then he hears whispers of a legendary starship, an unbeatable vessel crewed by heroes built to confront threats across the stars. It is called The Last Horizon.
