The Captain's Return

Back home in a village close to Steepwood Abbey, a soldier everyone believed had died in battle walks again among familiar streets, yet nothing about his homecoming is quite as expected.

Captain Henry Colton meets Annabel, the woman he once loved and quarrelled bitterly with before he left. She has built a quiet, settled life as a widow and is raising a little girl. Given how they parted, Henry has little reason to think Annabel will welcome him back into her world.

With few options, he settles on a bold pretence: presenting himself as Annabel's husband, returned from the war against all odds.
