The book traces how modern understanding of ordinary cell reproduction took shape over time. It explains the molecular mechanisms that set off copying of the cell's DNA and duplication of its chromosomes, and shows how cells keep their genetic material accurate through each round of division. It also examines how a cell's size and signals from its surroundings determine when it grows and when it divides.
