The Coroner
About This Book
Emily Hartford is a third-year surgical resident in Chicago, newly engaged, when a call pulls her back to Freeport, Michigan, the small town she left ten years ago after her mother's death. Her estranged father, the local medical examiner, has suffered a serious heart attack, and she is needed to help him through his recovery. Her arrival is hardly quiet. She runs the town's only stoplight and is stopped by Nick Larson, her high school sweetheart, who is now the county sheriff. At the hospital she finds her father brushing off how grave his condition is. What he wants from her is simple: take over the autopsy of a senator's teenage daughter, whose sudden and unexplained death has shaken the community. Emily agrees, reluctantly, to help both her father and Nick. Once she begins the examination, she realizes the girl was murdered. The work takes her back to the hours she spent in the morgue with her father as a young teen, the experience that first drew her to medicine. As the case grows, so does her involvement, and she finds herself drawing closer to her father and to Nick, which does not please the fiancé waiting for her in the city. Then someone threatens Emily herself. With the danger turning personal, she has to identify the killer before he can act again.
