The Dancing Boy
About This Book
In the quiet lanes of Calcutta in the 1980s, a boy named Moyur spends long hours alone in front of a mirror. He wraps himself in his mother's saris, paints his face and dances around the room. Sometimes, mid-twirl, he glimpses a face that is his and yet not quite his. Outside that room, things are harder. His mother is ashamed of how effeminate he is, and his friends mock his oddities. Moyur grows up as an outcast without ever meaning to be one, and only his neighbour and friend Jonali seems to understand him. This debut novel is a sensitive and evocative portrait of a boy who never quite fits in. It also tells the story of his twin sister Moyna, who died before she was born.
