The Forbidden Path

Germany, 1650. Suspicion and superstition have gripped the countryside. Eight-year-old Emma watches in horror as her mother is seized and set alight on a charge of witchcraft, and she runs toward the flames with all her strength. Her uncle is powerless to save his sister, but he pulls the stunned girl away and carries her across the sea to England.

Emma seals the memory away and grows into a striking young woman who will not accept the limits her society places on women's desires and conduct. For her own protection she is pushed into a marriage that exists only on paper. Then she meets a man she truly loves, but jealousy and hidden truths surface and put his life in danger.

The Black Plague returns to the land and claims thousands of lives, among them her beloved foster mother. In London, a small blaze in a bakery swells into a vast fire that devours the city and tears open the memory Emma has buried. Terrified, she rushes into the flames to reach her lover. Can she make it through, or will the fire raging within her soul consume her instead?
