The Group
About This Book
Mary McCarthy's novel follows eight young women who have just graduated from Vassar. Their classmates call them "the group." They come from very different backgrounds and have very different personalities. A week after graduation they gather for the wedding of Kay Strong, and that gathering opens the story. The book is set in the Depression-era 1930s and was first published in 1963. After the ceremony each woman starts her adult life. Some travel to Europe, some work in nursing or publishing, and some find love and heartbreak in New York City. As the years pass, a few of the friends drift apart while others become tangled up in one another's affairs. All of them have vowed not to turn into their parents. The novel is a sharp, satirical and frank portrait of American social life between the two world wars. It also traces how the friendships hold up over time, until the death of one of the women brings the rest back together to mourn a friend, a confidante and a member of the group.
