About this book
Comparing myths across cultures has become a fraught business. Scholars once flattened every tradition into versions of one universal story, and many now argue that cultures are too distinct, and too politically charged, to be set side by side at all. Wendy Doniger rejects both positions in The Implied Spider and argues that comparison is still worth doing, and that it can be done responsibly.
Her method is a kind of double vision. The microscope keeps each story tied to its own context and history, while the telescope lets patterns show up across traditions. The title's implied spider is the shared human experience behind the many webs of story that different cultures spin in their own ways.
For Doniger, myths are more than old religious tales to be believed or dismissed. They are ways of working through suffering, desire, violence, gender, justice and the divine. She moves among the Hebrew Bible, Hindu texts, Greek myth, folklore, fairy tales and modern retellings to show how a myth can reveal a culture from the inside.
The book is also about the political life of myth. Myths can disguise power and violence, but they can also preserve dissent and carry voices, women's voices especially, that official accounts tend to suppress. They are not history in a simple documentary sense, yet they record the sentiments through which history is often made. The result is a lucid, adventurous defense of reading across cultures without erasing what makes each one distinct.
