The Rainbow

Isla, living in present-day London, is gathering photographs for her grandfather's 95th birthday when she finds one of him wearing a Nazi uniform. She has always loved his stories of growing up in Poland before the war and of fighting as a young soldier to protect his people, so she wonders whether everything she believed about him was false. His dementia is too advanced for him to answer her questions, so she wraps herself in the rainbow-coloured scarf he kept from the war and sets out to learn what lies behind the photograph.

Her search takes her back into the past, to a story of childhood sweethearts pulled apart by family obligation. It also follows a young man who put his safety, his love and his standing among his own community at risk so that he could work covertly for justice while embedded within the enemy's ranks.

The novel explores love, betrayal and a secret carried down through one family. It draws its inspiration from a real story.
