The Second Spy

Olive Dunwoody has survived some truly terrifying things inside the old stone house, but she is convinced nothing can top the dread of starting middle school. Then the ground gives way in her backyard and she tumbles through a hole into a very different kind of trouble.

Down below, Olive finds that Annabelle McMartin, the dangerous woman she thought she had dealt with, has returned. She also finds a hidden secret under the house, one that frees two of the most cunning and menacing forces Elsewhere has produced so far. Meanwhile, the house's strange cats are behaving suspiciously, her best friend may be moving away, and her ally Morton is starting to push back against her. Olive has no clear idea who to trust or where to turn.

The stakes are simple and frightening. If she cannot work out what is happening in time, Olive could be pulled into Elsewhere and kept there for good.

This is the third book in the Books of Elsewhere series, a spooky middle-grade fantasy. It began with a pair of enchanted spectacles, then a deadly book, then magic paints that let a world called Elsewhere spill out like a dream turned nightmare. At its center are the stubborn, imperfect Olive, three talking cats, two loyal friends, and the hard-won trust that holds them together.
