About this book
Margaret Jacob traces how daily life in eighteenth-century Europe was reshaped by a secular way of thinking. Her book moves beyond the famous names of the period, such as Locke, Voltaire and Rousseau, to include freethinkers, freemasons, French materialists, anticlerical Catholics, pantheists, pornographers, avid readers and travelers, whose voices have seldom been heard.
Jacob argues that this new outlook did not simply reject Christianity. It opened a fresh mental space in which people could engage with the world on its own terms. Drawing on rare archival material, she follows the story through London, Amsterdam, Berlin, Vienna, Turin and Naples, showing how ideas that later underpinned secular democracy reached into every part of ordinary life.
The book describes concrete changes in behavior. Human weaknesses that had once been blamed on sin were now explained through the emerging social sciences. Worshippers visited churches to admire the architecture rather than to pray, and some spent Sunday mornings reading a newspaper or a daring novel. Secular-minded people pursued material and commercial well-being without regard for the afterlife, attributing their success to their own efforts and their failures to impersonal economic forces.
The Secular Enlightenment is a work of intellectual and cultural history. It examines how secular values and practices took root in eighteenth-century Europe, crossed into the American colonies, and continued to shape the Western world for generations afterward.
