The SāṃKhya System
About This Book
The Sāṃkhya System examines an ancient Hindu system of thought and the delicate relationship it describes between witness consciousness (Puruṣa) and manifest reality (Prakṛti). Sāṃkhya offers a path to freedom through knowledge. It spans philosophy, physics, metaphysics, psychology and ethics. It is notably not theological, yet its key premises appear in virtually all the religious traditions that originated in India. Sāṃkhya holds that Prakṛti, the realm of activity, and Puruṣa, the silent witness, stand in a reciprocal relationship. It also maps the experiences that arise from Prakṛti, including the workings of the human body, the five great elements and the eight mental states. Its central claim is that knowledge of the world and the self can lead to freedom. The book offers a new translation of Īśvarakṛṣṇa's Sāṃkhya Kārikā, with grammatical analysis. It also gathers interpretive essays on the philosophical side of the system by Geoffrey Ashton, Ana Funes Maderey, Mikel Burley, Christopher Key Chapple and Srivatsa Ramaswami. Marzenna Jakubczak, McKim Marriott and Alfred Collins write on its sociological and psychological applications.
