The Sleepwalker

Annalee Ahlberg seems to have everything: beauty, a successful career, a loving family and a handsome Victorian house in a small Vermont village. But she has a secret condition. At night she sleepwalks, and her episodes can turn strange and dangerous. One night she rises from her bed and does not come back.

A search party combs the surrounding woods and finds almost nothing. Her husband and daughters brace for the worst. Her elder daughter, Lianna, leaves college and comes home to look after her father and her younger sister while the family waits for answers.

The detective leading the investigation is Gavin Rikert, and Lianna finds herself pulled toward him despite everything happening around her. The two begin a relationship, but something about it troubles her. Gavin appears to know more about her mother than he ought to.

As Lianna goes through the traces of the life her mother left behind, she begins to ask a frightening question. Could the man lying beside her be the one who holds the truth about what happened to Annalee? Chris Bohjalian builds a suspenseful story of secrets, grief and hidden desire, in which a family's quiet surface slowly gives way.
